It’s easy to tell when the scorching summer months have come to your home: a clamour for iced juices at the breakfast table, the use of lighter items of clothing, a desire to spend early mornings outdoors but also the resolve to be indoors by noon.

There’s also the desire to turn on your home’s air conditioner, one that grows stronger as the temperatures continue to rise.

But before you commit your prized home appliance to a season of keeping your home cool and comfortable, have you checked and prepared it to take on the scorching summer heat? Read on for a quick list on how to get your wall mounted air conditioner in tip-top shape as the hottest season of the year approaches.

Check for and evict unwanted animal squatters.

Wasps and bees love to nest inside wall-mounted air conditioners, and if you’ve left your air conditioner unused over the colder months of the year, it’s best to check for any unwanted inhabitants inside your unit before the summer months kick in.

Be sure to check the wiring on your air conditioner as well, to make sure there is no damage done by mice and other rodents.

Mind the air filter.

A dirty air filter can reduce the amount of cool air that your air conditioner releases. Thankfully, it is very easy to ensure that your air conditioner’s air filter is clean. On a lot of wall-mounted models, the filter can be easily accessed by dismantling the front panel.

You can easily clean the air filter with water and any regular household cleaning agent (even white vinegar can do the trick). But be sure to let the filter dry completely before reinstalling it back on your wall mounted air conditioner.

If your unit’s air filter seems beyond salvageable and has become damaged, it would be best to replace it with a new one. Moving forward, especially with your air conditioner’s regular and continued use, make sure to clean the air filter at regular intervals, ideally at least once every month.

Empty out and tidy up the water pan.

Over the hottest days of the year, you want your wall mounted air conditioner to be blowing not only cool but also clean, quality air. To avoid the musty odour that can sometimes come out of mouldy air conditioners, be sure to clean your unit’s water pan with any common household cleaning agent and rinse it afterwards with water.

Keep the condenser coils clean.

Did you know that making sure your air conditioner’s condenser coils are clean can help you save on your energy bill? A build-up of dirt and dust on your unit’s condenser coils will mean your air conditioner will have to work harder to discard heat and cool the air. So be sure to clean your air conditioner’s condenser coils with a brush and a few sprays of your choice of regular household cleaner.
